Here is Kevin Smith’s entry into the list and we are not 50 movies in yet but this is my least favourite of his greatly funny films. This just didn’t wash it for me and I wanted to enjoy it but just couldn’t. The score is still in the high sixties but that is move to do with Kevin Smith than this story. Should I just jump straight in..
The story revolves around two comic book writers (Ben Affleck and Jason Lee) who meet up with a female comic book writer called Alyssa Jones played by Joey Lauren Adams. Affleck’s character – Holden McNeil becomes very friendly with Alyssa until he falls in love with her, the problem being that she is not interested in boys. Holden continues his pursuit of Alyssa until he confesses his love for her and they begin a relationship. Thinking he was the man that changed a lesbian straight he was probably thinking he was gods gift to women. His business partner Banky is jealous of his partners relationship and digs some dirt on her to split them up. This is successful and in attempt to bring both relationships together to make it all work Holden develops a plan to make it all work out in the end.
That all that I’m going to say without spoiling the whole thing where I think I’ve said enough already. As I said this is my least favourite Kevin Smith film yet it was a box office hit based on a budget of $250,000 it grossed $12m and was critically acclaimed as well. Everyone seemed to love it fans and critics a like but something didn’t work for me and I am not sure what it was. I am scratching around trying to put my finger on it and still not sure. Joey Lauren Adams accent is really annoying but I’ve seen her in other things and it hasn’t bothered me but I think her acting is a little wooden. I think the script is fantastically written and takes you on a roller coaster of emotions but I think it just didn’t fit well with me and that’s all I got. In terms of a recommendation I cannot say skip it because you will watch it and enjoy the story maybe there was not enough laughs in it for me but I am still trying to work out what turns me off. Maybe I should watch it again and see what changes.
