#367 - Superman Returns (66% v1)

This is a 2006 superhero movie and had been the subject of my first ever revision in score as I had the wrong movie in mind when I gave this a mid-forty score. This is effectively part 5 of the Superman saga which I loved so much. Well I enjoyed them (not enough to go out and buy a copy but you get the point). Christopher Reeves will always be ‘my’ Superman and it will take some actor to take my love from those first three movies. The first two are just great and the third survived thanks to my love of Richard Prior who clearly carries it.

This movie is set some five years after the catastrophe that was the search for peace. The first example of a comic book franchise taking a higher ground and trying to preach to its audience. Sad to say they haven’t learnt from the financial bomb that was Superman IV but that has little to do with this movie. Superman has been on a jaunt around space in the search for his home planet Krypton and is shocked by what has happened to his adopted home because of his absence.

Unfortunately, Lex Luthor is played by Kevin Spacey and he has been in a few films that I really enjoyed and I am not sure if I am still allowed to like them anymore which may explain the really low score which has already been revised upwards once. Lex is the reason for a power outage and uses this to kidnap Lois and her son. Oh yeah Lois has had a son whilst Superman was off searching for his missing planet. The assumption here is that she has been playing away whilst Superman was playing away. Her son has asthma so cannot be the son of the son of Jor-El but this is a spoiler alert as it turns out he is. Lois get a message out of their location and Superman comes to rescue. I have probably spoilt the plot enough so will end with the usual ending of believing the hero is dying as he was showered in pieces of Kryptonite and in a hospital bed.

This was not a bad movie and it was low on this list as I had it mixed up with another movie and I am sure there will be other revisions as I get to review movies and then think hang on this is better (or worse) than I originally thought. I have to be honest and say I was never a huge Superman fan. From DC I loved the darker and grittier Batman stories than the happy stories of glory from Superman but this is not a bad film for a franchise I am not a strict fan of. It has its place in my collection and will have an outing the player and visible on screen much more often that the film that preceded it.
