This was a TV movie that obviously didn’t go to the cinemas to generate some additional information to include in the first paragraph for you. This hit television screens in 2005 and went into production in 2004 so effectively means this would be the first Muppets film since being taken over by Disney. Yes Disney own everything and no it doesn’t mean its any good. The old stuff is very good and the new stuff is just the old stuff put into live action. LEAVE IT ALONE!!! And come up with something new FFS!!
Sorry I digress again, the plot of this one is basically the original story in the muppets way and it scored a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes 5.3/10 from IMDb and is pretty low on my rating also. It stars Ashanti, Jeffrey Tambor, Quentin Tarantino (yes that Quentin), David Alan Grier, Queen Latifah, Steve Whitmire, Dave Goelz, Bill Barretta & Eric Jacobson. Ashanti plays Dorothy Gale and orphan who moves in with her Auntie Em who lives in a trailer park in Kansas. She dreams of making it big as a singer but knows this is a difficult and improbable journey. It just so happens that the Muppets are travelling the country with a show called ‘Star Hunt’ (stunt what?). The hurricane warning siren rings out and whilst everyone heads for a basement Dorothy heads for the trailer to save Toto her pet prawn (played by Pepe the King Prawn). Well the rest of the story continues along the same lines with Kermit playing the Scarecrow, Tin Thing (Gonzo) and Cowardly Lion (Fozzie). The Wicked Witch of the East and the Good Witch of the North are both played by Miss Piggy. If you don’t know the story a much better version is available and on this list much higher up than this version to find out.
Well it was turned into a musical on the executives say so and it was only meant for tv which cuts it some slack but if Disney have all this money then money shouldn’t be an excuse. This is probably the least viewed muppets movie in this house that could be because its been hidden or it could be because of a lack of desire to pull it out and actually watch it.
