I remember watching an interview with John Cleese and he said that people remember things better than they actually were. They sieve out the bits they didn’t like remember the bits they did and fondly remember something they didn’t really like. I think this maybe the case with this review score. I think I remember the first two movies with joy (well just about) and it has had a reflective glow on this movie.
This came out in the late nineties and had Michael Jackson music used to sell it more than may of deserved. I will struggle with the grey matter to remember the plot in great detail but I will do my best to start with and then cheat for the rest of this! Jessie (I think) the main boy from the first two films is now a researcher and working with Killer Whales in the wild and Willy with his girlfriend? erm wife? I’ll go with lady friend are under threat from a whaling ship that is pretending to be a normal fishing vessel. Now Jessie is p!ssed off and starts investigating the boat and gets himself into trouble before he wins the day and Willy gets away again and that is not a spoiler because its in the films title. It couldn’t of been that bad if I’ve remembered that much but I will now go and check Wikipedia before seeing how right I was.
Well the movie came out in 1997 and had a song by Michael Jackson in it so Boom! How do you like them apples. Ok, I have to admit that the main character is called Jesse I just put the extra ‘i’ in it. Well my plot frame work is almost word for word on Wiki (You don’t need to check, you can my word for it!) There was a slightly more detail about the son of the whalers changing sides and helping Jesse save Willy again and a couple of paragraphs about the chase and the whale rescue but that apart it was word for word exactly what I said up there, it also took $3.4m in the box office which is smaller than most budgets of modern films (hashtag just saying).
If you loved the first one or two of this franchise you are getting more of the same in this outing its not going to win an Oscar (I just scared myself then and went to check wiki again that it didn’t win any Oscars and it didn’t!) but it will pass an afternoon with the kids if they like killer whales or are interested in taking up a life on the seas killing living sea-life just for you supper. Or if its 2am and you are struggling to sleep and satellite TV has nothing else better on the other 389 channels then you really should give this a go!
