#381 - Sponge Bob Squarepants: Sponge Out Of Water - (64%)

Obviously, this is not my film but I did go to the cinema to see this with my son. I hated it but it was still better than some on films I have on this list. Now you know that I was sat in a 3D cinema in 2015 watching this movie. The only thing I really remember from that experience was recognising the actual actor that appears in the movie and spending the majority of the 93 minutes trying to work out it was Antonio Banderas.

What I remember about the plot is something to do with a Pirate played by Antonio has a book that whatever is written in it can become real. In the cartoon world something happens to the recipe for Krabby Patties and everyone starves and the place town thing where they live - hang on I’ll check (it’s called Bikini Bottom!! Really!) OK, where was I? Oh yes Bikini Bottom has become a desolated wasteland so Sponge Bob and a few of his friends float off in a bubble to the surface and then CGI – 3D in the real (non-cartoon) world go in search of the recipe. Many different japs occur and my son lapped it up and absolutely loved this movie and to be honest he was not alone. The cinema was full of kids who also loved it and was uncontrollably pleased with this movie. Now there was one fundamental floor for me to appreciate this movie and don’t get me wrong this was a hit in the box office and I believe they made more movies as well.

So why did it now work for me and this is very much on a personal level it was that I didn’t watch the cartoon and didn’t know the characters. The only thing I knew of Sponge Bob was that introduction theme tune. Beyond that there is a giant tongue and a snail called Kevin? That’s about it. If you’ve seen more than a handful of the cartoons and enjoyed them then this movie would be great for you as it ticked more than one box. There were funny elements but I missed many other jokes as they were ‘in’ jokes and flew over my head but that said it is still better than nearly 20 odd movies on this list with much bigger budgets that produced a turd of a film. Go enjoy!
