#39 – A Comedy Sent By God Himself Apparently (89%)

Monty Python returns to my list for the third and final time. Obviously my favourite one of the three movies and probably one of the worst endings to a movie ever as it just stops. Not enough to ruin it but enough to just laugh at it which is ultimately what is trying to do. ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ was released by 1975 And is a British comedy set during King Arthur’s rein. Produced by Mark Forstater and Michael White, directed by Monty Python's own Terry’s namely Gilliam and Jones, Writing credits went to the entire Monty Python team. This story went on to become a stage show called Spamalot which had a few little twists than this version of the story. Made on a budget of $400k but more importantly for the boys and the ex-wives it went on to make $5m which is a tidy profit to be shared out. Not only was it popular at the box office it also was with the critics with IMDb giving this an 8.2 out of 10 and Rotten Tomatoes gave this an amazingly near perfect score of 97%. Which explains why it is so high on my list as well. Shall we get to the random sketches stuck together to try and form a plot.

Set in AD932, King Arthur and his Squire - Patsy are travelling Britain in search of brave men to join as Knights of the Round Table. On his travels he recruits Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-As-Sir-Lancelot along with their respective squires and Robin’s minstrels. After being led to Camelot the group decide it’s a bit too silly to visit but before they can turn around God appears in all his glory and orders them to quest for the Holy Grail. The new band of Knight now travel the earth in search of the Holy Grail for God. The film follows their journeys as they each encounter mysterious, strange, and unusual adventures on their quest. Including a strange French Castle in the middle of England which whole scene is hysterical. There you have it, that’s the overview of the story.

This is hilarious and jammed packed of quotable lines throughout. I will have to add that this movie has my favourite line in any movie with the end of the battle of Arthur and the Black Knight. After having both arms removed in the fight, he also loses both his legs and as he sits on the floor with the victor riding away, he calls out behind him ‘Alright! We’ll call it a draw!” Still makes me laugh even just thinking about it. Merely a flesh wound. Sorry, there are so many quotes I could go through. From here on its going to be exceedingly difficult not to turn this into a quote-a-thon it’s a great movie for that. There is scene after scene of fun and stupidity, this movie is just funny and silly and for me the best combination of Monty Python humour in one place. There is a loose story running throughout this, but you can easily dip in and out of this movie and still enjoy it, but you will be missing something funny whilst you are away from the screen. I cannot recommend this movie enough and if you missed it in your time then you’ve missed out. Go find it and watch it NOW!

Next up is Stephen King doing what he does best of surprising you with a different type of a story that you wouldn’t put with Stephen King naturally…
