Ghostbusters was a great movie bringing together Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis writing skills with Bill Murrays humour and is one of my favourite movies. The second one did not stand up to the comparison to the first movie. It felt like this movie wanted to follow not the first movie but the cartoon spin off tv series. Characters had changed from the first to the second movie with Janine being the biggest one that resembled the cartoon and not the previous film. Slimer was a character in the cartoon that became something of a pet for the four ghostbusters, this movie feels like the men up top looked at this as people loving slime and goo and then wrote a story about it. This was a film about the Ghostbusters going from the heroes of the first film to zero’s then back to heroes again. There were scenes and jokes that made me laugh and I enjoyed but the overriding story which is why we love movies is just lacking in this film. It just misses the mark and leaves you empty and wanting something else which moves you to other movies rather than loving the franchise.
The boys have to rescue the city of New York because everyone hates everyone else. And all this hate is turning into negative slime which has formed a river which is flowing under the city. Meanwhile a worshiper of evil has escaped from an ancient painting and now possessing one of the friends of Dana (Peter Venkman’s ex-girlfriend). He is determined to kidnap Dana’s baby ‘Oscar’ who he wants to possess himself to re-enter this world. Well this sounds all good except the slime is experimented on enough that the boys can use it to turn inanimate objects into living moving objects. So, they slime up the Statue of Liberty who then walks through the city to save the whole planet again. Unfortunately for all its efforts this movie lacks enough quality to hide the cracks of the poor story and direction. This story just doesn’t work, maybe a feature length version of the cartoon may have been a better option. Much better than this dribble but could kill and hour on a Sunday afternoon maybe if there really is nothing better on other channels that day.
