#397 - Alien v's Predator - (40%)

This 2004 movie follows on from the first 4 Alien movies and the first 2 Predator movies. For me it doesn’t break the halfway mark and the problem for me, with this movie is that it is trying to stand on the shoulders of giants and yet still doesn’t reach anywhere near their lofty heights. The Alien franchise will (spoiler alert) score very highly on this list and the Predator movies would too if I own them (of course I do!). Both franchises begin with two great movies and they can stand their own ground against many other movies which I won’t review in this movies section as they are some of the greatest ever and this movie is trying to mix the two together in a blender and then bake this into the greatest crossover movie ever.

It fails.

This had all the ingredients for a stupendous three tier wedding cake with decorations to take your breath away instead you have you have a supermarket bake mix which you add an egg and bake yourself before dribbling some icing over the top. Yes, it serves its purpose but it could be so much better than what you actually get. The basic story they came up with a pyramid temple buried deep, deep under the earth full of Aliens or xenomorph’s where the predators go to be initiated into a warrior life by living through the tunnels within and killing an alien and using its blood to mark its helmet. So, when the female protagonist of the film team up with the predator to defeat the swarming aliens was about the time my interest had run out completely with this movie. I am not going to mentioned Lance Henriksen here as my own mind doesn’t want to connect him to this particular movie in the franchise. I get that they had a big task of mixing these two together which only I believe came about because people thought they saw an xenomorph skull on the trophy wall of the predator’s ship in its second movie. As the rumour grew they wanted to use this to bring two great franchises together and take over the world, it didn’t work and they brought another AVP 2 movie and then the franchises split back on their own routes but to me it didn’t improve either of them once again proving my theory that if something is great… LEAVE IT ALONE!
