Scoring the same from me these was the follow up to Clerks from Kevin Smith, this was his attempt with some extra cash behind him to see what he could do. There were some additional visual gags but this movie has the same verbal monologue of dialogue back and forth. Something that become a bit of a trait for a Kevin Smith movie. This was released in 1995. With a list of names of young actors who went on to bigger namely Jason Lee, Jeremy London, Shannen Doherty, Claire Forlani, Ben Affleck, Jason Mewes, Joey Lauren Adams, Michael Rooker, and of course Smith himself. There was also an appearance by Stan Lee to boot. As with Clerks this was written and directed by Kevin Smith but produced by Sean Daniel, James Jacks and Scott Mosier. Critically not as liked as Clerks with IMDb being slightly less with a score of 7.1 out of 10 whilst Rotten Tomatoes took a nose dive with a score of 56%. Having a much bigger budget of $6.1m this completely bombed at the box office returning a mere $2.1m which was less than Clerks, however this is film has more of a cult following its cinematic failings compared the first movie. A bit more of a romantic comedy following two buddies trying to do nothing at a shopping mall.
TS Quint is in love with Brandi Svenning and is planning to propose whilst on vacation to Universal Studio’s just as Jaws pops out the water. Brandi tells Quint that she cannot go as she has volunteered to be a contestant on her fathers new dating game show ‘Truth or Date’ which he is trying to get backing for. They are going to film it at the mall where both Quint and his buddy Brodie likes to hang out. Brodie on the other hand has recently become single after his girlfriend had become tired of his sluggish ways and left him a Dear John letter as she has to sneak out of the house as he still hasn’t told his mother about her. She runs straight into the arms of the handsome manager of ‘Fashionable Male’ Shannon. With Brandi and Brodie’s ex Rene ready to date others its time for these Mallrats to get their act together and sort their lives out and go win back their girls.
This is another great Kevin Smith movie and the colour and the lights woo-ed me. As this is probably doesn’t stand the test of time as Clerks does. This looks dated but this is funny, its silly and outrageous with the typical Smith heavy dialogues throughout which if you can keep up you will enjoy so much more. Laugh out loud I did and I would hope that you would to. There are more clicky moments with references to other movies and back on itself it also reference some of Smiths projects which hadn’t even taken off by then which I love even more. This was linking movies long before the avengers were even toying with the idea. I cannot recommend Kevin Smith enough and if you enjoy the movies then go see his question and answer tours that he does as you get to hear stories from behind the camera and he appears to give honest assessments of other Hollywood stars that they may not appreciate him sharing. Anyway give this one a watch after you watched Clerks first.
Leaving the comedy world behind we go back to horror with one of the most terrifying horror icons out there coming in at the number 57 slot.
