Directed by Tom Holland produced by Herb Jaffe it was also written by Tom Holland as well, this 1985 movie and I have to add the I can't believe this was 1985. I thought it was made years after that time but it is still a great movie. Produced on a budget of less than $10m this movie went on to make $24.9m at the box office. It starred Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Roddy McDowall, Amanda Bearse, Jonathan Stark, Dorothy Fielding, Stephen Geoffreys, and Art Evans. This is almost a cult classic movie it did spawn sequels an countless remakes and copies. The one that Springs to mind for myself, is exactly the same story but rather than a vampire it was a werewolf. Which I currently can't think of the name of this film off the top of my head (it will come back to me probably halfway through and when it does I will let you know). The critics were slightly split with this one with IMBD giving this 7.1 out of 10 whilst our friends at Rotten Tomatoes gave it 92%, which is even higher than me.
Plot wise is a classic story of young boy who loves watching Peter Vincent a present of a TV show called ‘Fright Night’ that introduces old classic movies. Many of which he had appeared in as a vampire hunter himself. Well this young lad Charley Brewster is a big fan which is all good. His girlfriend Amy Peterson is fine with it along with Charley’s best friend Evil Ed. That is until Brewster’s new neighbour moves in and he has seen signs that makes him believe that a Vampire along with his servant have taken over the home next door. His theory becomes an obsession and he does all he can to prove it. This gets the attention of the neighbour and actually being a vampire who could do some serious damage to Charley he has to prove who he is and get support. Being skint Peter Vincent is open to being contacted by Charley’s girlfriend and then being hired by her to help prove to Charley that his neighbour is just a normal guy. The plan somewhat backfires when Peter see’s something that makes him believe Charley but being an actor rather than a vampire hunter he is not interested in getting involved. The vampire is becoming tiresome of Charley’s actions and is now going onto the offence. I think that is a good place to stop.
This is a great although slightly dated movie. It has the perfect balance of comedy and horror with strong characters that merge together perfectively. This is a movie with spooky scene’s and jump scares and everything to tick the boxes of an 80’s American mainstream horror movie. The comedy elements is all that of the heroes who cannot seem to get a coherent plan together. Calling he police in and once they are in the house investigating to then tell them he’s a vampire just concludes the search with the accuser looking like a complete fool. This keeps happening and Charley looks like an idiot through the majority of this movie. Meanwhile the cool kid of the group Evil Ed is such a cool character that everyone loved him and the horror fans loved him because of his story arch as well. If you are you are looking for a fun, entertaining, scary and a truly enjoyable 80’s movie then you don’t need to look too much further than this one. Go enjoy it.
Next up is yet another Christmas movie this one is an out and out comedy…
