Now I thought this movie was panned by the critics well I think I have that wrong as even IMDb gave this a 6.9 out of the usual 10 and Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 81% which is not too far away from me. I don’t know where I got that impression from but I saw this before the first one and instantly fell in love with it. Yes, I will get to its faults but I am not going to rush to them. This sequel to the 2009 original movie called (surprisingly) Dead Snow, this one has the sub-title Red v Dead and was released five years later in 2014. This is also in 5th place in my sub-titled movie list. You could argue that there are sections of this that doesn’t have subtitles as there are three American characters in the movie, that speak English throughout. With those in mind the movie stars Vegar Hoel, Orjan Gamst, Martin Starr, Ingrid Haas, Jocelyn DeBoer, Stig Frode Henriksen, and Kristoffer Joner. Directed by Tommy Wirkola who also wrote it along with Stig Frode Henriksen and Vegar Hoel. Tommy was the main man for the first movie so was the man for the second also. Set in Norway like the first film this was predominantly filmed in Iceland. I think there’s enough here now and move onto the plot then shall we?
What you need to know from the first movie is that the character Martin was the only survivor from the last movie and he lost an arm but kept his life. Driving away from the chasing zombies the leader Herzog is holding on the outside of the car when hit by a truck removing his arm also. Martin blacks out in the crash and awakes in hospital to be told that the doctors had found his arm and was able to reattach it. Having a Nazi Zombie Commanders arm with its own feelings on life may have a problem. Particularly an arm that wants to kill people (anyone in fact) and also has the power to bring life to those already dead and allow them to control them. So waking up his arm goes on a killing spree despite Martin’s best efforts to stop it he has to escape, helped by Bobby a young American who tells Martin of the Zombie Squad, a professional team of Zombie hunters and exterminators. Bobby is murdered for helping the escape by the arm. Martin contacts ‘the squad’ who mobilise and travel to Norway. The squad is a guy (Daniel) and two girls (Monica and Blake) who like Zombie movies and clearly has no experience of this before as there has not been any other ‘real’ zombie outbreaks before. Meanwhile Martin has run into Glenn Kenneth a souvenir shop sales assistant and Glenn explains about Herzog’s history as he was sent by Hitler to wipe out Talvik (a village) because of their anti-Nazi sabotage. Herzog having stolen the gold back is now moving back to his original orders of taking out Talvik. What after Talvik? The whole country of Norway? Then the continent? The whole world? The squad, Martin and now Glenn have to team up to stop them at the first step. How will they defeat an army? Well as Martin is starting to get control of the arm, they could raise a new army themselves to fight Herzog’s army, so where are they going to get an army from?
You have to watch it, to get that one for yourself. As I mentioned this movie I stumbled onto late one night and I am pretty sure it was part of a season of horror movies on Film4. This movie made me laugh out loud and that doesn’t happen very often with movies. This is silly and stupid and not really looking at the horror side of the story compared to the last one but it does not take itself seriously and it also isn’t afraid to spend a lot of budget on blood and rubber body parts. I haven’t even mentioned the police who are trying to track down the murderer Martin and as more murders stack up from the Nazi’s how are they going to deal with that little issue. It all builds to a full on Nazi vs ‘the reds’ battle on a field with kids sandpit and small houses dotted about as tanks and soldiers come to blows in a massive brawl. Seriously if you love zombie movies, nazi’s getting d**ked over, reanimated dead men eating their own puke, uncontrollable arms, stupid American’s quoting Star Wars for no apparent reason, stupid humour then this movie is right up your street. Go watch it.
Ok tough act to follow, particularly with a ‘kids’ movie about rescuing a baby from the clutches of evil. Evil that likes singing and dancing in particularly tight trousers…
