As promised here is a horror sequel that I mentioned. One that I loved and others hate and not because they are scared of it but because they simply didn’t like it. I could just dive straight into the critic scored straight away. OK I will. IMDb gave this movie a 5.9 out of 10 and Rotten Tomatoes gave it even less with a 44%. Budget wise it took $13m to produce this movie and it went onto a profit with a $35.8m at the box-office. It missed out on being a classic eighties horror by being released in 1990. This was described as another slasher movie when I think it has lots of elements more than that but there is a hell of a lot to confirm that idea. Staring some Alex Vincent, Jenny Agutter, Brad Dourif, Gerrit Graham, Christine Elise and Grace Zabriskie. Which seems like a list of horror cameo’s with Alex playing Andy in many Child’s Play movies, Jenny from An American Werewolf in London, Christine from Body Snatchers and Brad who was in every other movie made in America (and yes we love him). This movie was two years after the original and followed the same characters to a certain degree and leads me neatly into the plot section.
After the action of the first movie Andy has recently moved in with his new foster parents although the father of the family is not convinced that they can control this boy with delusions and may of killed people in the past just to blame it on his doll. With (oh!) Jenny playing his wife they also have another girl they are fostering called Kyle. She is a street wise smoking kid who doesn’t bother unpacking as it’s a waste of time before the family move her on. Into this family Andy steps in who is returning to the sweet kid he was at the beginning of the first movie. Meanwhile over at the Play Pals Corporation – Good Guy factory the faulty doll is reassembled and when a power serge kills one of the workers it also brings the soul of Charles Lee Ray back into newly made doll. Instant death comes to anyone who gets in his way as he works his way back to Andy at his new home. Andy has attempted to get over his past by hooking up with another Good Guy doll that was in the house. He must be getting over it. When Chucky finds the home and replaces the doll with himself. Attempted to remain in the shadows of everyone else yet trying to terrify Andy Chucky’s plan to bring horror to this world is hatching.
I like this movie but it is far from a classic and I can fully appreciate why others don’t like this movie. It is poor in many aspects but where it shines for me is it follows on from the previous movie. It has Andy returning but without his mother so she has clearly got a better gig and swanned off for bigger and better things. Those left behind had a new set of parents with Alex and (oh!) Jenny who play their parts well. The compulsory teenage rebellious within the household who not only battles for freedom with controlling parents but also takes Andy under her wing and help him to grow. Chucky was the same as he was from the original movie. That was big influence on me liking this movie. The fact the character hadn’t changed into the comedy figure of the later movie he was still a raw and amusing killer as opposed to cartoon killer of the younger movies. I liked and enjoyed this movie and maybe that is because of the first movie more than this one but ask me if I care because I don’t. Many people rubbish this movie and I don’t have a problem with that each to their own. This is for me and I’ll keep it that way if you don’t want to watch this movie, I won’t argue with you.
Next on the list is an iconic horror movie that scared and shocked a nation…
