#98 – The Italian Job – (82%)

For those of you making notes this is not the oldest movie in my list and its not even close as this 1969 which was three years after Alfie and five after Dracula but Fantasia in 1940 was beaten by the Wizard of Oz in 1939. It was released to huge success in the UK and across Europe surprisingly but failed to have any kind of impact in the states. The cloak and daggers and rumours about the budget of this movie suggested that it was made on a budget of $5.5m and it was believed to of made a $10m return from the British box-office alone. Yet the film is reported to of made a loss due to distribution cost and percentage charges. That’s all I am saying about that if you want to check this out be my guest. In terms of stars we have Michael Caine, Noël Coward, Benny Hill, Raf Vallone, Tony Beckley, Rossano Brazzi and Maggie Blye in the list. I fear the scoreboard is not going to be mentioned or updated again as this had mixed view with IMDb giving it a 7.3 out of 10 whilst Rotten Tomatoes agrees (almost) with me with a 83% score. If you have read my other reviews you will know I will miss off the dramatic conclusion but here is the overview for you.

Charlie Croker has just been released from prison and meets the widow of his friend and crook Roger Beckermann who has just been murdered by the Mafia in Italy. On an Alpine tunnel where the through him and his Lamborghini Miura off the cliff after crushing it. The reason he was in Italy was for a big time robbery which his wife hands to Croker. The details are to escape north with $4m worth of gold from Turin. Croker gets the support of the big time crime lord Mr Bridger who is doing time in a cosy prison after paying off all the guards. With his financial backing Croker pulls a team together and including Prof Peach who is an IT expert who they plan will be able to disable the Turin road network by screwing up the traffic light signals. With the roads blocked they can get into the safe’s and get to the gold but how are they going to get out of the gridlocked city themselves. The mafia again still want the money to stay in their country and stop Croker from crossing into Italy at the same point on the Alpine mountains but Croker talks himself out of being murdered. Their cars are trashed and he has to walk back. With all seeming lost they can now hatch their actual plan and see if they will be able to get away with the millions worth of gold. Will they get away with it?

Well if you haven’t see it I won’t ruin that question for you by telling you if they escape to Switzerland or not. What I can tell you is, you should see this movie. This has to be on your to watch list. If you haven’t seen it and you haven’t see the conclusion to this movie then give yourself a treat. Pull up a blanket a mug of tea or a glass of something colder and spend a Sunday afternoon in front of the TV watching this classic Michael Caine movie. Don’t expect stunning effects or even that dramatic stunts but the zooming around in the red, white and blue just brings a smile to your face. I don’t want to mention the remake as it was awful and the proposed sequel to that was canned and I wholeheartedly agree with there not being a Brazilian Job as the remake was bad. Very bad. Compared to this dated British criminal loving movie of crooks outdoing the police and other crooks in the aim of lining their own pockets with more money than they need. I am desperate to say more but this will ruin the story for you so I will curb my enthusiasm and say go watch it if you haven’t but if you have seen it you know exactly what I am talking about.

One of the most spookiest movies on my list up next with a Spanish movie up next on the list... Pretty please give this next one a read as I love this sad, spooky, scary and melancholy movie…
