FINALLY WE ARE IN DOUBLE DIGITS JUST 99 MORE REVEIWS TO GO… The second part of the Cornetto trilogy was released in 2007 and starred a list of British stars as long as your arm. I will get to them in a moment or two after I explain what 95% will already know. The trilogy is made up of three unrelated stories with no characters the same but filmed by the same director and starring the same main actors they were put together as a group of movies. Within each movie there is a reference to the ice cream cornetto. This is where the name of the Cornetto Trilogy comes from. This movie is directed Edgar Wright, Stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost which completes the team. This movie also stars Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Timothy Dalton, Bill Nighy, Billie Whitelaw, Edward Woodward, Bill Bailey, David Bradley, Adam Buxton, Olivia Colman, Ron Cook, Kenneth Cranham, Peter Wright, Julia Deakin, Kevin Freeman, Martin Freeman, Paul Freeman, Cate Blanchett, Peter Jackson, Stephen Merchant and Steve Coogan. And breathe! This was produced on a budget of mere $16m and went on to return $80.7m at the box-office. There was quite a bit of difference between the other critics and me with IMDb giving this a 7.8 out of 10 and Rotten Tomatoes loved it with a 91%. Enough background? Yes I agree onto the plot.
PC Nicholas Angel is a great cop in the Met Police. Maybe too good as he never switches off and is always on duty whether in uniform or not. He is promoted so his colleagues see the opportunity to get shot of the halo boy and send him off to be reassigned to Village of the Year in Gloucestershire. PC Angel is soon bored and frustrated at the lack of crime in the sleepy village, until villagers star mysteriously start dying in strange ways that his Police sense is tingerling. Meanwhile he teams up with a rubbish cop called Danny who is lovable and in awe of Angel and continually asking questions about his former police work and is desperate to learn from Angel. More people keep dying in strange ways and Angel is now on the case of murder whilst the rest of the station’s police force think he is just a bit highly strung and needs to learn to just calm down. When he finally uncovers the truth its an even bigger surprise than we first thought.
OK I like about two thirds of the movie and weirdly I enjoy the other third as well but I just cannot and I’ve tried put the two sections together to give me the perfect movie. The twist is too big for me and I cannot get over it. The story sets its up as well and everything is geared that way when you watch it a second time but I still want a different conclusion. It does work and many people love it. I love it but not as much as I wanted to. Its funny clever and plays with the audience in a playful get invested manner which does make people fall in love with it. It has quick cuts which adds to the drama and make the story feel like its going at a pace. Which with this fast romp of action and comedy set in a sleepy village does lend for some very funny sections. Nick Frost plays a lovable and silly beat cop to perfection, Simon Pegg’s total police enforcer is again played well and all the British stars that have come out of the woodwork are great to see as well. There are so many elements that make this a great movie but for me there is something missing and I cannot put my finger on what yet. I think its to do with the twist and the complete change of direction of the story which is not a bad thing I just don’t think it worked for me. I wanted the shock but didn’t appreciate it when it arrived. As I write I am very conscious that this is sounding very negative and I really don’t want to be as this is great movie and if you haven’t seen it. You should, it has everything you want from action, gore, mystery, mayhem, Bill Bailey, violence, Police chases, guns, explosions, model villages and humour in the bucket loads. I really like this movie and really recommend it as well. Once you’ve seen it we’ll have a chat about putting my finger on what the issue is as it’s a small one and doesn’t affect the film itself but it does bug me.
To keep going on this final line the next movie is comedy, action, adventure movie with the ultimate cliff-hanger ending…
