What just 20% on this one! Well yes and I think it would have originally started higher and dropped and dropped. This maybe for political reasons but hell this is my review and my views are my views ALRIGHT!! This movie took my childhood and screwed it into a ball and threw it in the bin. I brought this film through my own OCD of owning a franchise and thought that the franchise could battle back into my affections in the future. I was wrong on both counts as this limp squib of a story was followed by a desperate film that attempted to cut all the links to this shamble and just makes matters worse.
Star Wars grew and became a classic and helped a young boy grow knowing that even the evilest of people can come back from their dark places and ultimately be good again. Clearly that was wrong as this end to the Skywalker story finished in a dumpster fire. The history of Star Wars goes back to original trilogy of episode 4,5 and 6 followed many years later with new episode’s 1, 2 and 3. Which I didn’t really enjoy that much but hearing that Disney had brought the rights and then promised 6 movies with 3 continuing the Star Wars story I had high hopes. So, the first movie came out and I managed to ignore some huge plot holes as it brought back some characters I loved and invested in, back to the screen and my emotions took over. I waited to see what gritty mid-story would follow this nostalgia trip and back in 2017 I sat in a cinema at midnight on its release date to watch this car crash of a film. When I go to the cinema just by default, I enjoy a movie and always seem to cut it some slack and I am naturally much more forgiving. After this film I drove home just feeling numb I was just confused with all of the story threads that was handed over by the force awakens that were just thrown away.
I was going to give some form of a plot in these reviews but I am not going to with this film as I can sum it up by saying this film systematically cuts off all the story threads handed over from the previous film and it just felt like it was the director just saying ‘I dare you to follow that?’ Knowing that the story was not there to follow and handing the reigns back to owners saying good luck! In my opinion what Disney should have had was a plan after buying the rights they didn’t. Instead the story should have arched across three films and you should begin with the end in mind. Have the conclusion to the story ready as you take people off in different directions just to yank the viewer to the end you knew was coming all the time but no one else could have predicted. What you finished with was a game I used to play as a kid when you would fold a piece of paper into three you drew a head on the top leaving a neck of two lines poking out from the top third. You then folded the head out of view and pass the paper onto the next person who draws the body and leaves two lines of the waist so the final person can draw the legs. You finish by opening the drawing to see what’s been created normally a shambolic creature that is completely unconnected in design, quality or link. An American football helmet wearing alien with six tentacles with two lovely long ballerina legs in a tutu. That sums up how Disney decided how to destroy this beloved story franchise.
There is one scene that sums up this movie is when Luke’s light sabre is returned to Luke on the island by Ray. It is symbolic of the Force Awakens being handed over to this director as he takes the sabre and just like the movie slings it over his shoulder just like this story. My childhood hero was thrown with it and in this movie, he was just farted out of the story and my hopes for these movies with it. If you want to watch something with Star Wars in the title go and watch episodes 4 to 6 and if at a push go with 1 to 3 as well. Save yourself some time and avoid the Disney big budget flashy screen presence without any substance to a story line a miss. They made 5 of the 6 planned movies and I could only recommend one of those movies and there was another that was just about ok but right now this bull has turned me not just against this franchise but Disney as whole.
